Pittsburgh Highlander Rugby

The Pittsburgh Highlander Rugby Football Club (PGHHRFC) is a federally registered 501(c) 3 non-profit charitable organization structured to foster the sport of amateur Rugby Union in the United States. The club was founded 1983 as the Westmoreland Highlanders in Latrobe, Pennsylvania before moving to the Pittsburgh area in 1994. Currently, the club is fielding competitive men and women’s sides that participate locally in both XV’s and 7’s competitions.

Under the direction of USA Rugby, the club’s play an annual competitive schedule organized by the Midwest Competition Region and is represented locally by the Allegheny Rugby Union. The club plays their league competition every fall from September through November. In the spring, the club plays regional cup competitions, tournaments and other test matches. In the summer months, both men and women’s sides participate in regional 7’s tournaments. The Highlanders currently field a roster of more than 70 active men and women in addition to hundreds of alumni in the Pittsburgh area and all over the country.

How Can I become involved?

If you are interested in trying out the club as a player, please feel free to contact us or just come out to a practice. Practices are held every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm at Phillip Murray Field near Pittsburgh’s South Side. The street address is 725 Mountain Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15210. The Highlanders are always excepting new players, with or without prior rugby experience, at all times of the season. New players are encouraged to attend practice to check out the club. If you’d like to participate, all you need is athletic clothing, cleats and a mouth guard. Once you’ve joined, all players are asked to regularly attend at least one practice per week.

Games are typically played on Saturdays at sometime between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. The men enjoy an extremely local schedule, with all league matches in the Greater Pittsburgh area. The women play a slightly more traveled schedule, with games in Pittsburgh, northeastern Ohio, and western New York.
